middlegamesSo long, loooong ago one of the first events Shikamaru was around for when he came to Luceti was a grab-bag event, in which he was de-aged to about five or six years old.
Fast-forward a few years to when the Kin'cora enclosure was introduced. One of the neat things we learned about them is, unlike Luceti, they didn't always bounce back from their experiments. There were instances of bodyswitches where no one was ever put back in their right body, people turning into animals and being stuck in that form forever, having their memories replaced with AU memories and so on. It was a neat touch, and it made me wonder what would happen if the same had happened for Luceti.
That's the idea this mini-plot runs on: an AU where Luceti residents can get stuck in shifts. In the case of Shikamaru, when he was turned into a kid for that event back at the end of 2010, when it was over he was never restored to his proper age. The result is a Shikamaru's who has been in Luceti for the same amount of time as the older one, but with entirely different experiences.
I'm not going to detail these thoroughly because this is just an event for fun, but here below the cut are some basic footnotes for what things are like in his version of events:
- Shikamaru's AU memories start in late November 2010, when he was about 5 or 6. He's now 9 1/2.
- He was never canon updated
- He knows a little bit about the war, but not in huge details.
--- On that note, he doesn't know that his father is dead.
- Was told who Asuma was when he was in Luceti, but naturally it and his departures didn't have quite the same impact.
- Never learned the truth about the Uchiha Massacre.
--- Never really got to know Itachi, or some of the other more peaceable Akatsuki members who came to Luceti as a result.
----- The plot with Hidan went differently.
- Chouji was his guardian for several months. When he left in Summer 2011 it became Ino, who was his main caretaker until her recent departure. Her boyfriend, Riku, is his current guardian.
- He can still use chakra, though not well.
--- He doesn't know a single Nara technique, and what's more can only barely manipulate his shadow.
- He no longer wants to be a ninja, but is pretty determined to find some new career path before he turns 12.
- Several different CR relationships.
--- Ex. when Ikki was around, they were probably closer playmates. Masaomi, on the other hand, he barely knows since they never became friends.
----- ...Mountain Dew is also no longer his favorite drink, as result of the last one. ):
- He goes to school now, and regularly hates it. He's learning more typical things, however, rather than a ninja education.
- He took to modern gadgets like computers better.
--- Ex: he likes video games just as much as board games now.
--- Also unlike prime!Shikamaru, this one freaking loves the Battle Dome.
- He's not the only one in Luceti who's "stuck", there's been several others.
--- Ex: Albert was an owl for several years, Raine is a teenager, Luke Skywalker is a prince instead of a moisture farmer, etc.
- The convenience store no longer exists. Rather it was turned into a slam poetry corner in the last two years, of all things.
- He's never been on a mission (for obvious reasons). Anything he did or learned there never happened as a result.
- Of the six drafts prime!Shikamaru was on, the kid-version was only on half, and always in the capacity of a non-combatant. Same for missions, anything he did on the drafts he was no longer apart of (such as leading a team to hunt Shifters, or helping restrain Moro in Vaskoth)
--- Drafts still present for: The Farmlands, Jungle, and TERRACE
--- Drafts no longer canon: Mines, Vaskoth, Zompania
PERSONALITY-WISE, same as his child self growing up in Narutoland, he's a little shit. 8| He's lazy and likes doing things his own way rather than what he's told, if it's not convenient for him. He's an opportunist when it becomes to behaving. If it's smartest/safest for him to listen, he will. But if it won't cause big problems and he thinks he can get away with it? Let's rebel.
That said, the younger Shikamaru is surprisingly more adjusted to Luceti and self-assured than his older counterpart. While he can still be a smart-aleck, but he's not as quick-witted. He's slower to rile, and thinks about his responses carefully. He remains serious in nature, even younger, but far less grim. He's pretty content with his life actually; while you couldn't call it optimism, he has an easy-going attitude with a confidence that if a situation is bad it won't always be, and that things will work out.
Other than the mention of the drafts, there's not a lot of things that will upset him. The drafts are singular in that, unlike his canon self in ninjaland, they were his first introduction to the reality of wars and fighting and (same as his canon self this time) they shook him pretty badly. The experience made him never want to be a ninja, and probably as a result from hanging around too many people from ATLA, probably made him more of a pacifist too.
But if asked he'll tell you it's all good, because now he just wants to find a new career path instead. In his version of events this is his main character arc, and he probably changes his mind on what he wants to be by the week. PILOT. ENGINEER. WIZARD? Wow wow don't laugh at him, he gives it all serious thought. 8|
